Incorporating Mayan culture into his design, Marcos created a sneaker that pays homage to his hometown in Mérida, Mexico.

Behind the Design

Marcos De la Cruz Chable lives in Mérida, a small Mexican city with hot weather and greenery. Inspired by his surroundings, Marcos incorporated Mayan culture into his shoe design string to showcase his heritage and culture. He took inspiration from the Chichen Itza Pyramid made in honor of Kukulkan, the snake god of sun.

Honoring the gods

Yellow accents and snakeskin textures pay homage to Kukulkan, snake god of the Maya.

Inspired by his hometown

Hints of green tones to represent his love and respect for nature.

About the Designer

Marcos De la Cruz Chable loves both design and sneakers. For the past five years, he learned about the footwear and fashion industries after falling in love with latin and hip-hop music.

Marcos loves to explore his country, but also enjoys visiting the U.S. and Canada. He entered the atmos Design Contest in the hopes of one day becoming a shoe designer and disrupt the fashion world. Marcos currently resides in Mérida, Yucatán, México. 

ATMOS DESIGN CONTEST

Garrixon teamed up with Japanese sneaker empire atmos to launch its second design contest. Targeting entry-level designers, participants created custom colorways on three sneaker designs using pattern swatches hand-selected by the atmos design team.

Hommyo Hidefumi, Founder Of Atmos, And Kojima Hirofumi, Creative Director Of Atmos, selected the top 16 designs, which competed in a voting bracket on Instagram stories.
